Compress Video for Discord Without Uploading It

Pick a clip and a size limit. Your browser re-encodes it to fit — the video never leaves this tab, and there is no watermark.

How it works

  1. You choose a clip. The browser reads the file from your disk. No network request carries your video.
  2. The size budget is worked out. The target size and clip length set the bitrate, and the resolution steps down only as far as that bitrate needs — a long clip becomes 480p rather than a blocky 1080p.
  3. Your device re-encodes it. The browser's own video encoder (WebCodecs) writes an H.264 MP4, which plays inline in Discord. If the result still lands over the limit, it is encoded again a little smaller.

Why Discord rejects your clip

Discord's help center lists the free upload limit as 20 MB (raised from 10 MB in August 2026), 50 MB for Nitro Basic and up to 1 GB for Nitro. It also now checks the size before compression on mobile as well as desktop, so a phone recording that used to squeeze through can now be refused. A minute of 1080p phone video is usually well over 20 MB.

The honest trade-off: fitting a long clip into 20 MB costs sharpness. Trimming to the moment that matters keeps far more quality than compressing the whole recording.

Questions

Is my video really not uploaded?

Correct. Open developer tools, go to the Network tab, and compress something. You will see the page, the script bundle and a few tiny counter pings — no request carrying your file.

Which browsers work?

Browsers with the WebCodecs video encoder, which recent Chrome, Edge, Firefox and Safari include. The tool checks your browser before it starts: without an H.264 encoder it writes WebM instead, which Discord also plays, and a browser with no usable encoder is told up front instead of failing halfway.

Why is my result smaller than the limit?

The budget keeps about 8% headroom, because encoders overshoot a requested bitrate and Discord refuses a file that is even one byte over.

Does it keep the sound?

Yes, re-encoded to AAC (or Opus in WebM). If your browser has no audio encoder for either, the tool says so before it starts and produces a silent file.

What does the encoding?

Your browser's built-in WebCodecs encoder, driven by the open-source Mediabunny library (MPL-2.0 licensed; its source code is available at that link).

Is this an official Discord tool?

No. Little Toolworks is independent and is not affiliated with or endorsed by Discord Inc. “Discord” is only used here to describe which upload limit the tool targets.
