Compress a Video to 10 MB for Discord

Discord’s free upload ceiling is 20 MB, so 10 MB leaves headroom and also clears chat tools that cap lower. The browser encodes an H.264 MP4 — nothing leaves this tab.

How it works

  1. You choose a clip. The browser reads it from your disk; no request carries the video.
  2. The budget sets the bitrate. Target size and clip length determine the bitrate, and the resolution steps down only as far as that bitrate needs — a long clip becomes 480p rather than a blocky 1080p.
  3. Your device encodes an H.264 MP4 with WebCodecs, which plays inline in Discord. If the result is still over 10 MB, it is encoded again a little smaller.

Why 10 MB when Discord allows 20 MB?

Headroom. Discord’s free limit is 20 MB, and its checks happen before compression. A file comfortably under 10 MB is far less likely to be refused, and it uploads faster on a slow connection.

Other destinations. Many mail servers, forums and bots cap attachments at 10 MB. If the same clip has to go to Discord and somewhere else, 10 MB is the safer single version.

Length decides the quality. 10 MB is 80 megabits. A 30-second clip gets about 2.6 Mbps — sharp. A five-minute clip gets about 267 kbps — visibly soft. Trimming to the moment that matters keeps far more quality than compressing the whole recording.

Free output is up to 720p. Pro raises the cap to 1080p, adds 50 MB and 100 MB targets for Nitro and boosted servers, and queues up to 10 videos.

Questions

Does Discord allow 20 MB?

Yes. Discord’s help center lists 20 MB for free accounts, 50 MB for Nitro Basic and up to 1 GB for Nitro. This page uses a stricter 10 MB target so the file is never near the edge.

Why would I choose 10 MB over 20 MB?

It leaves margin for Discord’s pre-upload check, uploads faster, and fits mail servers or forums that cap at 10 MB. Use 20 MB when Discord is the only destination and quality matters more.

How long can the clip be?

It depends on the quality you accept. 30 seconds gets about 2.6 Mbps; five minutes gets about 267 kbps. Longer clips need more trimming or a lower resolution.

Will the video still play inline?

Yes. The output is an H.264 MP4, the format Discord plays inline.

Is the video uploaded?

No. Decoding and encoding run in this tab.

Can I compress several clips?

Free handles one at a time. Pro queues up to 10 videos and allows 1080p output.
