Compress an Image to 50 KB
A tight target, common for avatars and older application forms. The browser scales and re-encodes the picture until it fits — and tells you when it cannot.

How it works
- Your browser reads the image from your disk. Nothing is sent anywhere.
- It tries smaller dimensions and lower JPEG qualities until the file is under 50 KB, keeping the first setting that fits.
- If 50 KB is out of reach, it says so and shows the smallest honest result, with the final width and height.
What 50 KB costs
50 KB is a thumbnail budget. A detailed photograph usually has to come down to a small web image to fit. That is fine for an avatar, a profile picture or a small card; it is not enough for a full-screen photo.
Faces survive better than texture. A portrait at 50 KB still reads clearly, because faces have large, smooth areas. Grass, foliage, fabric patterns and fine noise are the first things to smear. Check the result card's dimensions before you download.
PNG is almost never the right output here. A lossless PNG of a photograph will stay far above 50 KB. Use JPEG unless the image is a flat-colour graphic or needs transparency, and even then expect a small canvas.
The target is an upper bound, counted strictly. We use 1 KB = 1,000 bytes, so a 50 KB result is at most 50,000 bytes — under a form limit whether it counts 1,000 or 1,024 bytes per KB.

Questions
Is 50 KB enough for a profile photo?
Yes, for a small avatar. The image is scaled down to fit, so it looks right at avatar size but will not hold up full-screen. The result card shows the final dimensions.
Why does the result look soft?
50 KB is a small budget for a photograph. The tool spends it on the best setting that fits, which usually means fewer pixels or a lower JPEG quality. A larger target keeps more detail.
Can I use PNG?
You can choose it, but a photographic PNG will usually miss 50 KB. PNG is only practical here for small graphics with flat colours or transparency.
Will it hit exactly 50 KB?
No — it stops at or just below 50 KB. That satisfies a ceiling, and it avoids throwing away detail the limit does not require you to lose.
What if it cannot reach 50 KB?
It shows the smallest result it could produce and its dimensions, rather than pretending the target was met. Try a larger target if the file is still too big.
Is the image uploaded?
No. The work happens in this tab. No request carries the picture.
