Compress Audio to 16 MB
Sixteen megabytes leaves more room than 10 MB: five minutes at 320 kbps, or half an hour at a decent speech bitrate. The browser does the encoding, and nothing is uploaded.

How it works
- Your browser reads the audio from your disk. No request carries the recording.
- It computes a bitrate from the target and the duration (target bytes × 8 ÷ seconds) and starts at the highest standard MP3 rung that fits under 16 MB.
- If the encoder overshoots, it steps down and retries. The result card shows the bitrate, channel count and length actually used.
What 16 MB buys by length
Short music keeps the top rung. Five minutes fits at 320 kbps; ten minutes at about 192 kbps; thirty minutes at about 64 kbps, which is comfortable for speech and acceptable for casual music listening.
An hour still fits. The maths lands near 32 kbps, below the 48 kbps stereo threshold, so the tool downmixes to mono. Spoken-word recordings survive that; dense music does not.
Email overhead is not included. Attachments are encoded again for transport, which adds roughly a third. A 16 MB file becomes about 21 MB on the wire — worth knowing if the mailbox limit is close.
Output is MP3 only. M4A, WAV, OGG and FLAC are decoded by the browser. ID3 tags and cover art are dropped, because a large cover image would count against the target.

Questions
Why choose 16 MB instead of 10 MB?
The extra room goes straight into bitrate. The same recording gets a higher quality setting at 16 MB, which matters most for music and for anything longer than a few minutes.
How long can a 16 MB file be?
About an hour at a low speech bitrate. Quality falls as length rises: five minutes gets 320 kbps, thirty minutes about 64 kbps.
Will my podcast sound good?
At 64 kbps mono or stereo, speech is clear. If the recording is music-heavy or has background sound, a larger target or a shorter cut will sound better.
Can I keep the original file if it is already under 16 MB?
The tool never returns a file larger than the original. If re-encoding cannot beat it, it says so and leaves the file alone.
Does it remove cover art?
Yes. The output is a fresh MP3 built from the audio, so embedded images and ID3 fields are not copied.
Is anything uploaded?
No. The file is read and encoded in the browser.
