Compress Audio to 10 MB

Ten megabytes is a common ceiling for attachments and upload forms. The browser computes the highest MP3 bitrate that fits your recording and encodes it — nothing leaves this tab.

How it works

  1. Your browser reads the audio from your disk. No network request carries the file.
  2. It reads the duration and computes a bitrate: target bytes × 8 ÷ seconds. It starts at the highest standard MP3 bitrate that the maths says will fit under 10 MB.
  3. It encodes the whole file once. If the encoder overshoots, it steps down one rung and tries again. The result card shows the final bitrate, mono or stereo, and the length.

What 10 MB buys by length

Short recordings keep high quality. At five minutes the budget works out to about 256 kbps, which is transparent for most listeners. At ten minutes it is about 128 kbps, still a good music bitrate.

Long recordings drop to speech quality. At thirty minutes the same 10 MB allows roughly 40 kbps, and the tool downmixes to mono below 48 kbps. Speech stays intelligible; music sounds rough. An hour would fall to about 16 kbps.

Shorter is better than lower. If the recording has dead air or a section you do not need, trimming it first buys far more quality than fitting the whole thing into 10 MB.

The output is always MP3. MP3, M4A, WAV, OGG and FLAC input are decoded by the browser; the result is a constant-bitrate MP3 from 8 to 320 kbps. Metadata and cover art are not copied.

Questions

Why MP3?

It plays everywhere and every standard bitrate from 8 to 320 kbps is available. A fresh MP3 is also predictable in size, which is what makes hitting a target possible.

How long can a 10 MB file be?

Length and quality trade directly. A five-minute track gets about 256 kbps; thirty minutes gets about 40 kbps. The result card shows what your file received.

Will it sound bad?

For speech, even the low rungs are intelligible. For music, anything near 40 kbps sounds rough; trim the recording or choose a larger target if quality matters.

Can I keep 320 kbps?

Only if the length fits the budget. At 320 kbps, 10 MB holds about four minutes. Longer files must use a lower rung.

Does it keep ID3 tags and cover art?

No. The output is rebuilt from decoded audio, so title, artist, album and embedded cover art are gone. Tag the result afterwards if you need them.

Is the file uploaded?

No. Decoding and MP3 encoding both run in this tab.
