PNG to SVG for Cricut, Layered by Color
Drop a logo, sticker or clip-art image. Each color becomes its own cut layer and the white background is removed — all inside this browser tab, with nothing uploaded.

How it works
- The background goes first. If the edge of the image is mostly one color, that color is cleared — by default also inside the design, so the middle of an O or A is open. Choose “outside the design only” to keep white details such as the white of an eye as their own layer.
- Colors are picked. The image is reduced to the number of colors you choose, starting from the colors that cover the most area.
- Each color is traced. Every color is turned into one vector path with its holes cut out, grouped on its own, so the file opens as one layer per color.
Why a PNG will not cut in layers on its own
Cricut's own help center says an uploaded PNG “will not be layered into individual colors like a vector file”. Design Space does offer a Convert to Layers feature, but Cricut's announcement says adding those layers to the canvas needs a Cricut Access subscription. A layered SVG imports as separate layers on any account.
The honest trade-off: tracing works best on flat artwork — logos, clip art, text and stickers. A photo turns into many small blotches. Fewer colors and the Smooth setting give cleaner, faster cuts.

Questions
Is my image really not uploaded?
Correct. Open developer tools, go to the Network tab, and convert something. You will see the page, the script bundle and a few tiny counter pings — no request carrying your image.
How do I use the file in Design Space?
Choose Upload, pick the downloaded SVG, and add it to the canvas. Each color is a separate path in its own group, which is the structure cutting software uses to split an SVG into layers. Ungroup if you want to move layers independently.
Does it work with other cutting software?
The file is a standard SVG with filled paths and no embedded images, so any program that imports SVG can open it. We have not tested every program.
A small detail disappeared.
Very small specks are dropped so the cut stays clean. Use Detailed, or Pro for tracing at a larger size.
What does the tracing?
The open-source imagetracerjs library (public domain), running in your browser.
Is this an official Cricut tool?
No. Little Toolworks is independent and is not affiliated with or endorsed by Cricut, Inc. “Cricut” is only used here to describe the software the file is meant for.
